The University of Iowa Voxman Music Building is a 190,000 sq-foot space that features a 700-seat concert hall, 200-seat recital hall, organ performance hall, and music rehearsal spaces.  LMN Architects won the AIA Award for Excellence for their design of a distinctive warped glass building. 

PCI and Ground Improvement Engineering (GIE) provided a design-build solution for the shoring system for the excavation for the new building.  The excavation was up to 23-ft below the existing ground surface.  The excavation shoring consisted of soldier beams, lagging and 40-ft long tiebacks. 

Space limitations were a concern on the south end of the excavation.  In the southwest corner of the excavation, a cantilevered shoring system was required, and soldier piles were installed within 10 ft of an existing building.  At the southeast corner of the excavation, Malcolm Drilling installed 3.5-ft-diameter caissons as a subcontractor to PCI, and 34-ft-long tiebacks were anchored within the caissons.
